About PAQA-South

Our History

PAQA-South, the Professional Art Quilters Alliance-South, was formed in May 2002 by art quilters in the southeastern United States. Our first organizational meeting was held May 10-11, 2002 in the Cary and Raleigh area of North Carolina. Forty art quilters from across the South came together to discuss what we want to do and how we want to do it.

We are patterned after the original Professional Art Quilt Alliance, in Chicago, who have generously allowed us to extrapolate our name from theirs, and our organization and activities from theirs. PAQA and PAQA-South are, however, separate and nonaffiliated organizations.

During October 4-5, 2002 we again met in the Cary and Raleigh area of North Carolina. An initial organizational structure was decided upon, officers were elected, and dues were set. Plans were laid for biannual meetings and future exhibitions.

PAQA-South became a non-profit 501(3)c corporation in 2009.

Our Mission
PAQA-South exists because its members feel the need to network with other fiber artists with similar interests and goals. Our specific aims for the innovative art quilt, art cloth, and art garment fields are to:

Provide educational programs for the public
Exhibit the work of fiber artists
Critique others' work if asked
Encourage new artists in the field
Provide educational programs for our members
Share wisdom and experience

To achieve these aims, we plan to have regular meetings and mount art quilt exhibitions.
